As I’ve described earlier, to the man or woman in the street, sport can be seen as a way to keep fit whilst helping alleviate the stresses and strains of the working day. It is however a career choice for some and whether it is through sheer hard work over a number of years or simply a gift or talent, a considerable amount of money is on offer for those who reach the pinnacle of their chosen sport.

Lewis Hamilton, the most widely praised and talked about driver in Formula One, came from a broken home with no history of motor-sport. His father took on three jobs in order to support him and fund his early career. He had an uphill struggle to make his way in what was predominantly a white-mans sport. Since those humble beginnings, it is now reported that he would be signing a deal worth about £55M to stay on at McLaren until 2012 which is worth about £8.5M a year plus he will get additional income from some marketing products. An achievement indeed!!

David Beckham, reputedly the worlds number one footballer (we all have our off-days!!), has signed a five year deal with Los Angeles Galaxy for reportedly about £125M which works out to around £480,000 a week!!

Finally, Tiger Woods the renowned golfer earned around £50M in 2006 according to the Golf Digest 50. That’s about £960,000 a week, if you’re interested.

Bye for now – I’m off down the driving range.
